HERITAGE OPEN DAYS
A HIDDEN GEM

In 1662, the Rev. Henry
Pendlebury of Holcombe, together with nearly two thousand other Church of
England clergy, was ejected from his parish under the Act of Uniformity, because
he could not, in all conscience, accept the Book of Common Prayer. For over
twenty-five years, Rev. Pendlebury continued to preach wherever he could, in
secret and illegally, and even in the open air. So began dissenting
non-conformist worship of English Presbyterianism to Unitarianism in Bury. The
first church was built in 1719. The bell from that chapel is now on display.
For
Heritage Weekend, on Friday September 7th and Saturday September 8th, between
10 a.m.
and
4 p.m;
we will offer tours of the church, both inside and out. The graveyard has been
replaced by pleasant gardens, although historical memories still linger there.
Inside, an unusual interior contains a sculpture of "The People Praising", by
Liz Mulchineck. Memorabilia includes a beautifully-illuminated liturgical
Service Book, complied in the 1800’s by five sisters, aged 14 and upwards.
Bury Football Club was
originally formed from the Bury Unitarian and Bury Wesleyan Football Clubs, in
1885.
This congregation, whilst
valuing its history and its past, has not allowed time to stand still;
church-life is vibrant; our aim is to continue to thrive for years to come! Come
and explore our building and our history with us.
A special Heritage Service
will be held, on Sunday, September 9th, at
11.15 a.m.
